Ostrich Drab Feathers

Ostrich drab feathers; 2 - 20 inch and longer in length; ideal as a decorative feather.

Available for purchase in singles, bunched or by the pound in all colours including natural, off white, bleached white or dyed.

Natural brown drabs, from the body of the Ostrich, are generally brownish-grey in colour. The drab feather is from the female Ostrich.

Natural blacks, also from the body of the Ostrich, are mostly black in colour and are from the male Ostrich.

All our prime quality Ostrich drab feathers are hand selected for quality.

Please note that drab feathers vary considerably in density, sometimes as much as 50%, due to the local growing climate which affects the thickness and therefore the quantity per pound. If you want a precise number of feathers, do not order a pack labelled "about" - order a package with a precise number.

Ostrich belly feathers

Ostrich belly feathers, from the under side body of the Ostrich, are generally whitish-grey in colour.

Small, soft and very fluffy, belly feathers take our dye very well with stunning results and there are some darker markings in the feather which does show through the dye process.

We also offer bleached white belly feathers, although these are not "snow white".

Off-white drabs and Bleached White drabs

Off-white drabs are the result of the natural brown or blacks being processed and all the natural colour removed. This is done with an aggressive bleaching and degrading process. Some loss of quality occurs in this process.

Off-white drabs take all our dye very well for a glorious array of colours.

Bleaching drabs is quite an aggressive process. We take the off white drabs and bleach them a lot more. Some of the feather lose quality when you bleach them white.

Bleached white drabs are "not" snow white. They are a good white, but if you need a snow white feather, then please purchase a bleached white wing feather.

Defective drabs

Defective drabs are a lesser quality, inexpensive drab feather. They are barred, tipless and may not be as fluffy.

Defective drabs are not hand selected for quality and we recommend that they are purchased in bundles, rather than as single, so the imperfections do not show as easily.
