I was told by an Illinois ostrich farmer that he feeds 4 pounds of commercial pellets per day per bird(pellets formulated for ostriches). However, I read an article saying the feed conversion rate is 1.7 pounds of feed per pound of weight gain.My questions:1.What is typical amount fed to adult birds (laying hens and the male)?2.I assume chicks during their first 12 months of age would average maybe one half the daily ration given to adult birds. Is this a low assumption? Many thanks for your comments.

MARK - every question you ask about feed does have some qualifications. How big the birds are, adult, chick, or whatever. The weather also is a factor along with condition of the birds. The birds need to be watch and they will dictate to you their needs. Email me with your questions and I will do my best to inform you of my experence. Mark,If you would, email me at MAZURI@UINET.CAMPUS.MCI.NET and I will try to help you out as much as I can. A couple things to share with you on the surface,1)The feed to gain ratio will depend on the digestability and quality of the feed-stuff.Lower quality/grade feeds will have a much poorer feed to gain ratio vs. a Higher quality/higher digestability feed.2)As chicks develop, their system continues to develop and change with regard to efficiency and other factors.Chicks specifically need a feed designed to get them growing according to their own, special, stage in life, especially as the particulary young birds are so very susceptable to sickness.Assumptions CAN be very expensive in feedingand management costs with respect to waste, over- or under-consumption, and general quality of life for the chicks.Based on these statements above, it will vary much between feeds and between birds. If you are interested in more info regarding feeding rates, ADG, ration types, growth rates, etc.Email me at the above address and we can discuss further questions. Thanks!Kelly O'C. : I was told by an Illinois ostrich farmer that he feeds 4 pounds of commercial pellets per day per bird(pellets formulated for ostriches). However, I read an article saying the feed conversion rate is 1.7 pounds of feed per pound of weight gain.My questions:: 1.What is typical amount fed to adult birds (laying hens and the male)?: 2.I assume chicks during their first 12 months of age would average maybe one half the daily ration given to adult birds. Is this a low assumption?: Many thanks for your comments.
