Hello!
I'm wondering if anyone can tell me if it's possible to keep an ostrich in the same pasture with a horse?
Thanks!
Joy

#How and why would the ostrich kill the horse? Do you know this from experience or word of mouth?

Hi Joy
I am an ostrich farmer in Australia. One of our colonies of birds (2 males, 4 females) have been in the same paddock as a horse and dozen sheep for the past couple of years with no incident.

Joy,
It's possible. Our horses, emus and ostriches have been paddocked and pastured beside or in close proximity to each other for years and they appear to be comfortable with one another, regardless of gender/generation.
The fence integrity has been compromised and they've commingled without incident.
However, I wouldn't deliberately do it in a paddock or small pasture because they could hurt each other or themselves as a result of fear rather than intention.
I suspect you're wondering due to lack of space, but why would you only want one ostrich? They do NOT make good pets, although a lone horse can, even though a horse is a herd animal.
If you DO have enough space for a free-range, "Lion Country Safari" situation, then you have a model to follow. :-)
Seriously, if you have several acres with natural barriers and separate feed and watering stations, there's no reason not to do it - as long as they aren't where either could be 'cornered' by the other accidentally, you're (and they're) fine. Ratites and equines have many infectious diseases in common that they both need to be vaccinated for too.
Hope this helped.
Darby:)
